چکیده

We describe a novel electro-optic double-modulation ~DM! sampling technique for ultrafast transient spectroscopy, which is characterized by a superior signal-to-noise ratio compared to that of a regular single-modulation technique. DM is achieved by a combined effect of a radio-frequency modulation, which eliminates most of the low-frequency noise, and an audio-frequency modulation, which makes use of a high-performance, low-frequency lock-in amplifier. The DM sensitivity is comparable to that of the more sophisticated schemes involving electrical mixing and the A – B noise reduction method. We show that the DM technique offers superior performance in two-beam transient pump-and-probe correlation measurements compared to the regular single frequency modulation technique and is an ideal scheme for three-beam picosecond correlation measurements. © 1998 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~98!01103-4#

Coherent, broadband midinfrared terahertz beam sensors

The generation of midinfrared pulses through the optical rectification extended the radiation frequency from a few THz to several tens of THz. The coherent measurement of a detection frequency greater than 5 THz was demonstrated using a GaP and a ZnTe electro-optic sensor. This optoelectronic technique opens the door to the midinfrared ~midIR! region for coherent emission spectroscopy, time-dom...

Subpicosecond Imaging System Based on Electro-Optic Effect

36 LLE Review, Volume 69 Ultrafast electro-optic (EO) sampling was first demonstrated in 19821 and has since become a valuable tool for testing optoelectronic and electronic devices and materials.2 Conventional EO sampling of weak electric fields employs a tightly focused, pulsed-laser probe beam to measure electric-fieldinduced birefringence in an EO crystal; hence, it is referred to as “point...

Electro-Optic Sampling of Single Electron Beam Bunches of Ultrashort Duration

The effect of ultrafast electron beam bunch dynamics on single shot electro-optic sampling detection schemes is examined. It is shown that ultrashort electron bunch fields of adequate magnitude can dynamically impose additional bandwidth on laser probe pulses. The significance of this effect is evaluated by comparing the dynamics of the laser probe to that of the nonradiative field of a single ...

Sri Reu 2013 Student Projects and Program Activities

This summer, Dr. Greg Faris and I used new optical techniques to create a system for stimulated Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering measurements that will evolve into a microscopy system for biological applications. The system consists of a pump and a probe beam, which are modulated to different frequencies, amplitudes, and pulse lengths by acousto-optic (AOM) and electro-optic modulators (EOM). The ...

Single-shot measurement of terahertz electromagnetic pulses by use of electro-optic sampling.

We demonstrate a simple scheme for capturing the temporal waveforms of a freely propagating terahertz electromagnetic transient in a single shot. The method relies on electro-optic sampling in a noncollinear geometry for the terahertz radiation and the visible probe beam, coupled with multichannel detection. The approach provides time resolution that is comparable to that of conventional electr...
